There is something about the feel of wood after you have smoothed its once blemished, damaged exterior. It is a 'softness' akin to rubbing a petal between your fingertips. To imagine that something so inherantly hard can feel this way...
I take my time and strive to create a 'feeling' with each piece that is refinished, repurposed or crafted.
My passion for restoring and creating comes from the time that I was fortunate enough to have with my grandfather, David Genz. Among many things, he was a master carpenter, an engineer and an all around amazing, well respected man. Grandpa took me under his wing and raised me in his workshop, showing me a world of structure, creativity and patience. I hope to pass these talents and lessons on to my own son.
The things that I build, make, upcycle or restore will bring an interest or bit of beauty to your space. Each piece will have its own personality for you to connect with. With prepayment and scheduling, I can do something unique to your taste. Just pick what you would like from the unfinished gallery. I will also accept a few special projects each month, such as those that you will see in the "Recent Projects" section.
I typically work with items that are of solid wood or metal that have been slated for the landfil or no longer desired. This is only part of my mission to uphold such values as protecting our environment and, in turn, our community. The "Community" section outlines other efforts such as river trails clean up and animal rescue.
"My Grandpa, to whom I owe so much."
I was originally born right here in Richmond. Life had different geographical journeys for me though. Most of my childhood and preadolescence was spent in Wisconsin. Life led me back here where I ended up putting down roots.
My Grandfather would often chuckle and tell me that I was a "perennial student." I have had schooling in everything from auto body repair to graphic arts to legal and business studies here at VCU in Richmond, VA. I originally came to finish graphic design, but ended up seeking a bachelors in criminal justice and forensics with a business minor.
During this time I have managed to progress from flipping burgers to a decent, long term job. It is not always full time and jobs are hard to come by, so I finally decided to turn my skills and hobbies into an actual business. I also wanted to honor my Grandfather's memory and build something for my son that he could actually see and perhaps use as a positive example in his future.
The community aspect is indeed important to me as I am a homeowner here and enjoy walking and biking the river trails. I grew up in the "Leave it to Beaver" era and that, coupled with my recent studies, being a parent and observation, has led me to be more involved.
